Product Manager - Mayday

Do you have accounting experience, and also a keen interest in technology and how it can improve the way we work? Can you think creatively to design innovative solutions to problems? Excited to drive the product function and be part of a fast-paced, growing team? We’re looking for you to be our first product manager.

About us

Our company, Mayday, is one of the fastest growing accounting-tech startups on the planet. We’re building automation tools and artificial intelligence to save finance teams from the pain of manual work. We’re hyper ambitious with a huge long term vision. We will mend month-end and enable real-time accounting.

Mayday was founded by two experienced entrepreneurs – David Tuck, an accountant then CFO by training who founded Chaser; and James Scott-Griffin, a software engineer who was CTO at Idio (now Optimizely) and Rungway.

We’re two years into our journey and we’ve got an amazing team of seven already in place, based in the UK and Australia. We want to find the right superstars to double in size, building a foundation for growth in 2024 and beyond.

David has spoken extensively about our journey on his build-in-public blog, Starting Up Again. Our values (with the link to the relevant post explaining each) are: Delight, Ownership, Curiosity, Boldness, and Balance.

You’d be joining at a time when we already have strong growth in customer numbers and revenue, and have ambitious plans to grow this year. Our customers are incredible advocates for our product – we’re proud to have over 125 perfect 5 star reviews on Xero’s App Store (and growing!). We won Xero’s Emerging App Partner of the Year Award for 2023. We’ve secured pre-seed investment from A* backers. We’re ready to go!

About the role

We had an incredible end to 2023. We grew our revenues by 2.7x in the fourth quarter, off the back of strong product-market fit. We raised investment to be able to double the size of our team and accelerate to the next stage.

That’s where you come in. We have had success with the three products we have in market currently, but we have ambitious product goals (we have talked about this vision on our blog), and need someone who can help us realise them. You will be accountable for owning multiple products and seeing them through to the same success.

This is a hands-on role with incredible upside as we grow. It’s not possible to be an expert in all facets of the role, and so there will be support from the rest of the team where required, plus the opportunity to take courses and explore learning materials to skill-up in them.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll lead the full lifecycle of product management, from inception through to customer support and validation in production.

What does that mean in practice? There’ll be a whole bunch of things, but here are the main ones we see today:

  • Be the Product Champion, both internally and externally: Gather feedback from customers and prospects; Conduct research into customer needs and use cases; Be the point of contact for how we can solve customer problems with our products.
  • Architect the Future: Work with the founders to align the product roadmap around the business strategy; Approach problems with a greenfield, ground-up approach to imagine solutions that don’t exist today; Produce wireframes and UX designs for your solutions, or work closely with someone who can.
  • Manage the Build: Structure the implementation into manageable and measurable chunks; Ensure engineers have all the information they need to build the product, and be there with the answer when they need more; Ensure the rest of the business is aligned on what will be available and when.
  • Educate our Customers: Work with the marketing team to speak about features to the world; Field questions from customers through our support channels; Write help-centre documentation so they can solve issues themselves.
  • Be responsible for Product Quality: Conduct pre-production testing; Measure features once they’re live to ensure they’re working; Know when to pivot or kill a feature that isn’t working.

How we work

Location: Hybrid. Work from home most days, with in-office collaboration on Fridays in central London (near Old Street).

Why you'll love it here

  • Flexibility and Freedom: Enjoy the perks of remote work coupled with in-office brainstorming and team-building.
  • Mentorship and Growth: Work closely with experienced professionals who are as invested in your growth as you are in ours.
  • Real Impact: Your work will directly contribute to our mission and goals. Here, every task matters, and every day is a chance to learn something new.
  • Future Opportunities: The sky is the limit for where you take your role as we scale.

About You

  • You have ambition, lots of it: You want to continue learning in your career. You want the satisfaction that comes from delivering incredible solutions to customers.
  • You have relevant experience: You’ve done accounting before and so you’re familiar with our customers’ pain points, and can bring your lived experience to the non-accountants on our team. You’ve demonstrated a product mindset in some way in your work up to now.
  • You think creatively: You can imagine ways of solving problems using the latest technology that are transformational compared with current methods.
  • You’re a great communicator: We need someone who can explain complicated accounting concepts to non-accountants, and make sure work is well-defined enough that we can build a successful team across continents.
  • You can work independently: You’re happy to pick up projects and just ‘figure it out’ when needed, but you know when to ask for help.

Not sure you tick all of the boxes, but still keen to apply? We still want to hear from you – get in touch!

Benefits

  • Salary up to £80k depending on experience (the job title is also flexible);
  • Share options from day 1;
  • 25 days’ paid holiday, plus public holidays;
  • Learning time baked into your day;
  • Work with lovely and experienced humans who love puns.
