Certified Apps
What are certified apps?
Certified apps are apps which are part of CFO Techstack’s App Partner Program. They have been evaluated by the CFO Techstack team to check they meet a specified set of criteria to ensure they are fit for finance leaders to use in their businesses.
How are apps assessed
| Criteria | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Security | Whether the app has ISO 27001 or SOC 2. We look at hosting, encryption, pen testing, breach notification and more. |
| Controls and access | What happens inside the app. Who can do what, whether every action is traceable to a named person, whether a mistake can be undone, and whether the app respects a locked period. |
| Audit support | Whether an auditor can be given proper read-only access, and whether supporting documentation stays intact once attached. |
| Integration depth | How deeply the app is wired into accounting systems. Which objects it reads and writes, and how current the data is. |
| AI and ecosystem | Where the app uses AI, whether you can see the basis for its output and override it, what happens to your data, and how it connects to the rest of your stack. |
| Scale | Whether the app holds up for a medium or larger business, for example volume limits, bulk operations, and what state data is left in when a sync fails. |
| Geography | Where the app is genuinely sold, supported and localised, and how it handles local tax. |
| Implementation | What hands-on help you get to go live, and what migrating from your current tool actually looks like. |
| Pricing | How pricing works and whether cost per entity improves as your group grows. |
| CFO Techstack Community evidence | How many finance leaders have recommended the app in How I Stacked It, and its public app store ratings. |
FAQs
Does certification mean CFO Techstack recommends this app?
Certification means the app has met a standard we’ve published and you can inspect. The assessment criteria is based on critical criteria which finance leaders use to validate whether an app may be suitable for their business or not. We recommend that you complete your own research and testing of apps before adopting them.
What is the difference between an app with and without certification when comparing apps?
Essentially, the main difference between the two is that information about certified apps has been fact checked by us and they have a deeper involvement with the CFO Techstack community. Apps who aren’t certified are still supported by How I Stacked It mentions, but they supply their own information about their app which we don’t review in detail.
How do apps become eligible for certification?
Eligibility comes from five or more How I Stacked It recommendations from finance leaders in our community. You can see how many How I Stacked It recommendations an app has via the app map.
Can an app pay to be certified?
No. Certification depends entirely on them meeting eligibility criteria and the evidence an app provides.
How often is a certified app re-checked?
All apps will be reassessed annually to ensure they continue to meet requirements.
Why isn’t the app I use certified?
Most likely one of three things: it isn’t on the App Map yet, it has fewer than five How I Stacked It recommendations, or it hasn’t applied. Certification is opt-in for apps, so if you think there is a key app missing, you’re welcome to let us know.
How do I see how apps compare to one another?
We recommend that you use our compare apps tool so you can see how apps compare to each other within their categories.
