Commercial Associate (Australia)

About Mayday

We’re an accounting-tech startup building automation to save finance teams from the pain of manual work. We’re hyper ambitious with a huge long term vision. We will mend month-end and enable real-time accounting. We have team members in the UK, Australia and South Africa. Australia is our biggest market.

We’re founded by two experienced entrepreneurs: David Tuck, an accountant then CFO by training who founded Chaser; and James Griffin, a software engineer who was CTO at Idio (now Optimizely) and Rungway.

We’ve had a brilliant first four years. We’ve built an incredible initial team. We have amazing reviews from our customers. We won Xero’s Emerging App Partner of the Year Award for 2023. We’re backed by elite investors. We raised Pre-Seed investment in 2023 and are just closing our Seed round to accelerate.

David has spoken extensively about our journey on his build-in-public blog, Starting Up Again. Our values (with the link to the relevant post explaining each) are:

The Role

Following incredible growth, increasing MRR 13x over the last 18 months, we’re excited to be expanding our Australian commercial team.

Australia is our largest and most important market, as Xero’s biggest customer base, and you’ll be part of a small but high-impact AU team (you will be a key part of our team of three). You’ll report directly to Jack, our APAC Commercial Lead, and work closely with our Sales Lead, as well as our global commercial and marketing teams.

This role is perfect for someone who is ready to accelerate their career. You’re joining Mayday at a pivotal moment, when we’re big enough to have momentum, but small enough that your impact will be visible and career-defining. You’ll get hands-on experience in areas most finance professionals never touch until they’re in senior leadership.

In this role you’ll gain hands-on experience across the full customer journey, from first demo through onboarding, setup, and ongoing success, while helping us scale our processes for a growing customer base.

This role is as broad as they come. It will encompass sales, customer success, support, partnerships, marketing and some operations. Specifically:

  • Delivering demos and sales meetings (predominantly via video call) with APAC-based prospects, both in-house finance teams and accounting firms, and converting them to paying customers.
  • Leading the development and rollout of more formal customer success processes, ensuring we can scale while keeping customers delighted.
  • Becoming a true product expert - able to advise on complex setups, troubleshoot challenges, confidently answer any support queries, and contribute to our library of help and training materials.
  • Managing relationships with APAC trialists and customers to ensure smooth onboarding, adoption, and ongoing value from Mayday.
  • Supporting partnerships and marketing initiatives;
  • Acting as our eyes and ears in-market, sharing customer insights to help guide product, support, and marketing decisions.

Given the breadth of scope, and the trajectory of the company, this will be an incredible career-defining role for the right person. There is so much opportunity for where you take it as we grow and where you can use this role to take your career

About You

  • First-hand experience of the problems we solve is invaluable. You will likely have worked as an accountant / finance person. You will be fluent in debits and credits;
  • Excitement about sales. You don’t need to be a sales pro or have done a sales role before, but the idea of speaking with customers, uncovering needs, and helping them see value excites you (not fills you with dread);
  • Naturally curious and a fast learner. You’ll need to become a true product expert, understanding our features inside-out so you can confidently handle complex setups and support questions;
  • You’re happy to take ownership. You don’t need the perfect instructions to get started, you see something that needs doing, and you do it well;
  • Hyper-organised. There will be so many moving parts to juggle in this role;
  • A great relationship builder;
  • Based in Sydney or Melbourne.

The Details

  • Competitive salary
  • Share options from day 1
  • 25 days’ paid holiday, plus public holidays
  • Learning time baked into your day
  • Co-working membership (if desired)
  • Work with a fun and ambitious team
  • Travel around Australia for events (potentially Asia and New Zealand in due course)
  • Time differences mean that some degree of early morning or evening calls is unavoidable. We will make sure the weight of those is borne evenly between you and the relevant UK / South African team members.
