Product Designer (UK)
About Mayday
We're an accounting-tech startup building automation and AI to eliminate the tedious manual spreadsheet-based work that haunts in-house finance teams every single month. We serve the mid-market end of SMB: in-house finance teams of 2–10 people. Our mission is to mend month end and enable real-time accounting.
We recently passed £1m ARR and are growing fast after four years in the market, doubling our revenue in 2025. We’re in a phenomenal position as category leaders, demonstrated by our strategic partnership with Xero and winning Xero’s Global People’s Choice Award ahead of 1,200+ connected solutions. We’ve also just completed our acquisition of Easy Month End, bringing their team workflow engine into our ecosystem.
Our team spans the UK, Australia, and South Africa, with the UK and Australia as our largest markets, and North America now opened up as a growth focus.
We’re founded by experienced entrepreneurs in David Tuck (ex-CFO and founder of Chaser) and James Scott-Griffin (former CTO at Idio/Optimizely and Rungway). Backed by elite investors, we’re doubling the team to 24 as we accelerate the next phase of growth.
The Role
Due to our recent growth, we are scaling up product development by adding great people to our product and engineering teams. We’re looking for a new Product Designer to work directly alongside our Head of Design to drive product innovation and deliver high-quality user experiences to finance teams around the world.
Design is at the heart of what we build at Mayday, and we’re early in our journey of moving finance teams out of spreadsheets and into purpose-built tools. This is a chance to bring your own ideas to the table, rethink the “this is how it’s always been done” workflows that define month end, and help shape a faster, clearer, more modern way for accounting teams to get the job done in Mayday’s month-end toolkit.
The ideal candidate
- Has at least 2-3 years of experience working in startups, and is comfortable moving fast with evolving priorities and some ambiguity, ideally across complex B2B and B2C products.
- Has proven experience designing intuitive, customer-facing interfaces, and can demonstrate this through a portfolio submission. (Mayday is currently exclusively on desktop)
- Is comfortable working end to end, including discovery, prototyping, and execution.
- Is strong at structured problem solving, and can distill complex workflows into simple, high-quality experiences.
- Communicates clearly and collaborates well with Product, Engineering, and stakeholders.
- Is looking for close mentorship from a senior design leader.
- Gets bonus points for:
- Using emerging AI tools and workflows to increase speed and creative output.
- Comfortably improving product experiences independently (eg: utilising no-code tools for experimentation).
- UX writing skills.
- Experience influencing cross-functional teams with data and strong rationale.
- Previous experience working in an accounting team or among finance professionals
Key responsibilities
- Design end-to-end product experiences, from research and ideation through to execution, iteration, and refinement.
- Partner closely with PMs and engineers to define product goals, scope work, and make evidence-based decisions.
- Support user research and usability testing, and turn insights into product direction and design improvements.
- Create prototypes, flows, and high-fidelity UI with strong interaction and visual craft, so engineering can ship high-quality experiences.
- Use analytics, feedback, and testing to iterate quickly and improve outcomes.
- Maintain consistency across the product, and contribute to the design system (components, patterns, and standards).
- Stay current on tools and best practices, and continuously raise the bar for design at Mayday.
