Sales Lead (Australia)
About Mayday
We’re an accounting-tech startup building the AI and automation to save finance teams from the pain of manual work. We’re hyper-ambitious with a huge long-term vision. We will mend month end and enable real-time accounting. We have team members in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Australia is our biggest market.
We’re founded by two experienced entrepreneurs: David Tuck, an accountant then CFO by training who founded Chaser; and James Scott-Griffin, a software engineer who was CTO at Idio (now Optimizely) and Rungway.
We’ve had a brilliant first three years. We’ve built an incredible initial team. We have amazing reviews from our customers. We won Xero’s People’s Choice Award for 2025. We’re backed by elite investors. We recently closed our Seed round to accelerate and grow the team to 24.
David has spoken extensively about our journey on his build-in-public blog, Starting Up Again. Our values (with the link to the relevant post explaining each) are:
The Role
We have extremely strong product-market fit. We’re building our go-to-market fit. This role is critical to that.
This role has both global and local (to Australia) aspects to it. You will be responsible for building and executing our sales process in Australia (and New Zealand) as part of our global commercial team of 10 people. You will be part of our 4-person ANZ commercial team. You will work alongside and report directly to David, our Co-Founder & CEO, who is based in the UK and responsible for our sales strategy. As we scale, we anticipate this role will report into a dedicated Head of Sales / CRO.
There are two key aspects to your role:
- How we work with accounting firms, both as direct customers (via our partner programme) as well as an influencer channel to leverage them (including by using our CFO Techstack community) to reach their clients with in-house finance teams;
- Owning our repeatable and scalable sales process: how we most effectively deliver demos and sales meetings (predominantly via video call) to prospects (both in-house finance teams and accounting firms), how we successfully convert prospects and trialists to paying customers.
There will be a huge breadth to this role. Given that you will be one of four ANZ commercial team members, it is anticipated that your role will, from time to time, encompass some elements of marketing, events, partnerships, account management, customer success, support and operations.
This will be an incredible career-defining role for the right person. There is so much opportunity for where you take it as we grow.
About You
- Love the challenge of building a playbook, with the mess and iteration that comes with it. This is a role for the off-road driver with four wheel drive, not (yet at least but will be soon with your help!) the Ferrari with the established playbook to execute on;
- Excited about the challenge of selling a technical product. There will be time and support to learn the ins and outs of Mayday. It’s imperative that you relish that challenge;
- Hyper-organised. There will be so many moving parts to juggle in this role;
- A great relationship builder;
- Proactive in experimenting with how you can use AI in your work. We’re an AI-first company. We’re building the market-leading AI to eviscerate the pain of month end. That cascades to the use of AI in internal workflows;
- First-hand experience of the problems we solve from working as an accountant or finance person would be valuable;
- Experience of working with accounting firms in a commercial capacity is also invaluable.
The Details
- Competitive salary;
- Share options from day 1;
- 25 days’ paid holiday, plus public holidays;
- It is anticipated that you will need to travel around Australia for events;
- There will likely be occasional travel to Asia and New Zealand;
- You will travel to HQ in the UK at least once a year;
- Time differences mean that some degree of early morning or evening calls is unavoidable. We will make sure the weight of those is borne evenly between you and the relevant UK / NZ / South African team members.
